The National Talent Science Examination is an annual national level examination. It held by the National Council of Educational Research and Training. The objective of this examination is to filter out the accomplished students of the nation. These students can be provided with scholarships to allow them to pursue their selected streams and studies. The NTSE is only a 10th class endeavor, for those who are below 18 years of age. The examination has two stages.
The first stage of the NTSE is a state level based examination being held in all states and union territories but the second stage of the examination is only eligible to those who have passed the first stage. This way students are sorted on the basis of their skill and knowledge and only those receive the scholarship who are worthy of it. The scholarship is received based on the overall performance given by a student in both stages.
Stage 1 of the examination involves students attempting the questions related to the subjects of science, mathematics and social sciences. One positive mark will be given for one correct answer but no negative marking will take place, according to the bylaws. The second stage of the examination will have the same format of rewarding one correct answer with one mark but a few exceptions have also been made as one-third marks will be deducted for every wrong answer but no negative marking will not be done on any unattempted questions.
The examination being divided into two stages is also distinguished between two sections, namely: MAT and SAT. The Mental Ability Test part of the examination is questioned use of mental abilities to overcome problems. It will include logical reasoning, analogies, pattern perception, problem solving and the ability to think and visualize and with all these topics included this section will have 100 questions. The SAT section which stands for Scholastic Ability Test also has 100 questions which will be further sub-divided into the mathematics, science and social studies sub-sections. The subjects of sciences and social sciences will each be worth 40 marks while mathematics will only have 20 marks to itself.
The duration of both the sections of the examination will be 120 minutes each while the format for the examination will be objective type. To qualify in this annual examination, a student in the general category must score at least 40% and the students in the reserved categories must score at least 32%. India being one of the most diverse countries on the planet, has a lot of minorities in its midst which are given reservation to protect them. This is why the NTSE gives special reservation to the discriminated people based on what category they have been classified into. The Scheduled Tribes and Castes have been reserved 7.5% and 15% respectively, while people with physical disabilities have been given 3% of the reservation.
Students move onto the second stage for which they are nationally challenged to score the scholarship. When a student qualifies stage 1 of the NTSE. For Class XI to Class XII, a scholarship of Rs.1250 per month is provided. A scholarship of Rs.2000 per month is provided for undergraduates and Postgraduates. The scholarship amount is fixed in accordance with the UGC norms for P.H.D.
The second stage of the NTSE 2021 will occur on July 1st, 2021 for which students will have to attempt the entire examination for four hours, from which two hours each will be devoted to the MAT and SAT section. The dates for the submission of the examination applications are different in each state which have to be submitted to the state liaison officer. The fee for the submission application will be set by the state or the union territory government.
