RMO- Regional Mathematical Olympiad


RMO is the second stage of the International Olympiad. Students become eligible for NMO by qualifying RMO. It is conducted by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE).

The syllabus for Mathematical Olympiad (regional, national and international) is pre-degree college mathematics. The areas covered are:

  • Arithmetic of integers.
  • Geometry.
  • Quadratic equations and expressions.
  • Trigonometry.
  • Co-ordinate geometry.
  • System of linear equations.
  • Permutations and combination.
  • Factorization of polynomial.
  • Inequalities.
  • Elementary combinatorics.
  • Probability theory and number theory.
  • Finite series and complex numbers.
  • Elementary graph theory.

Preparation Tips-

Solve the best quality Practice problems-

Try to solve all the previous year questions available in the market. Even though any problem-solving practice you get will be helpful, but you want to qualify this Olympiad, spend majority of the time solving previous year GMO questions.

Do not waste your time-

Quality practice time is the key! Do not waste it doing unnecessary chores. Find a quiet room and ambience where you can study with sheer concentration.

Focus on your weak points and avoid tiny mistakes-

Keep track of the problems which you were unable to solve or where you felt your concepts were not strong. Ask your teachers about the problem and make a plan to get similar problems right in the future.

Make a proper time table-

Set aside a dedicated time in a day when you only study for the Olympiad. Studying once in a week is not going to take you anywhere.

Attend other mathematics competitions-

Attend other competitions for practice. If there is a math club or group, join them as well. More you practice, more are the chances to qualify the Olympiad.

Refer different books-

You need to solve many questions from different books in order to excel this exam as the Olympiads contain advanced level questions and problems. Preparing from advanced level books will certainly give you an edge and acquaint you with higher-order thinking skills

Solve previous year papers-

Previous year papers are key to success in this exam. By solving them you can identify your strengths and weaknesses and can work on them.

Practice! –

There is nothing to memorize in Mathematics. All you have to do is practice. Solve advanced level mathematical problems as many as possible.
